Understanding pigmentation treatment options

The general categories of treatment used for pigmentation, and how to think about which might suit your concern.

This guide explains the general categories of treatment used for pigmentation in Singapore. It is general information for your research only — not medical advice.

Start with the diagnosis

“Pigmentation” isn’t a single condition. Sun spots, post-acne marks and melasma can look similar but are managed differently, so the first step is identifying what you actually have.

General categories

  • Topical — lightening creams and prescribed actives. For melasma, dermatology centres note that topicals plus diligent sun protection are usually the first step.
  • Procedures — chemical peels and lasers are considered in some cases, but they can sometimes worsen certain pigmentation (such as melasma) if used inappropriately.
  • Sun protection — daily and consistent; it underpins every plan.

Setting expectations

Pigmentation often needs ongoing management rather than a one-off fix, and results vary between people. A doctor can set realistic expectations for your skin and avoid approaches that might backfire.
